The Renacer Coffee School, which translates to 'rebirth' in Spanish, launched in 2019 when Catholic Relief Services convened a group of small-scale farmers, co-op managers, and NGOs to find more cost-effective ways for farmers to renovate their coffee farms. Today, the school in western El Salvador has trained hundreds of farmers and technical staff on soil restoration, tree management, harvesting, quality control, and more while offering support in bringing their coffee to market and ensuring they receive an equitable share of the value. Nearly all technical staff employed by Renacer are younger than 25 and increasingly the students who attend are youth and young professionals.
