Luzmila Orellana, is the wife of Alberto Fichamba, and lives in Peguche, a small artisan village outside larger town of Otavalo in the province Imbabura, found in the Northern Sierra of Ecuador. They began work when they married over thirty- five years ago. However, the current economic conditions have forced the family to undergo difficult changes.
Alberto currently lives in Quito, the capital city, over two hours away while several of their adult children have left for the United States. In a small room in their humble home Luzmila sells the chalinas and flap pouches she weaves as well as the the Morralle bags that her daughter- in- law, Rosa Lema, produces. The family must depend on the infrequent visits of tourists, thus INTO allows the family entry into an outside market that ensures a more dependable income. Luzmila's adult daughter, Susana lives next door and performs her own embroidery. She is INTO's main contact within the family as Luzmila is semi hard of hearing and has trouble with Spanish at times.
